The Sig Sauer P365 X Macro has made a big impact in the firearms world, providing great capacity in a small package. However, with so many options out there, is the popular P365 X-Macro always the best fit? For some people, the answer is a clear no. Creating your own custom P365 might not only result in a better firearm but could also be a more affordable choice.

 

 

The Problem with Subcompacts

 

Many shooters, especially those with bigger hands, feel both positive and negative about subcompact handguns with skinny grips. They are easier to carry, but this comfort can hurt performance. If you can hide and shoot a larger gun like a Glock 19 effectively, why give up that ability for just a little more comfort? Many people dream of a micro-compact that performs as well as a larger, more trusted compact like the M&P 2.0 Compact or the Glock 19.

 

 

 

The X-Macro Revelation

 

Initially, the Sig P365 X Macro seemed to be the right choice. After trying a friend’s upgraded X-Macro, I was impressed by its performance and decided to buy one immediately. The solid grip and high accuracy of this micro-compact really changed the game. Why You Should Consider a Custom Setup

 

Here’s a breakdown of the cost and benefits of setuping your own P365 versus buying an X-Macro off the shelf:

 

• Cost-Effectiveness: An OEM X-Macro typically ranges from $800 to $850. If you decide to upgrade the grip to something like the Icarus Precision A.C.E. 365 XMACRO Grip Module (around $400), you’re already looking at a total of approximately $1260. That’s nearly the same price as the high-end Sig Sauer P365 Spectre Comp model.

• Superior Ergonomics: The Icarus Precision grip module, made from 7075-T6 aluminum, has re-contoured ergonomics that allow for a much higher and more secure grip. This is a significant advantage for recoil management and overall control, especially for shooters who find standard polymer grips lacking.

• Customization from the Start: By starting with a standalone P365 Fire Control Unit (FCU), which can be found for around 

  $275-$

  350, you can handpick every component to suit your preferences.

 

Here’s how a custom setup could look:

 

• Base: Start with a standard P365 or a standalone FCU.

• Grip: An Icarus Precision Grip Module is a fantastic upgrade that transforms the feel of the gun.

• Slide and Barrel: The FDEZWERX P365XL slide is essentially an X-Macro slide with an integrated compensator. Paired with a 3.1″ X-Macro barrel, it provides the same performance as the stock X-Macro.

The Pros and Cons of the X-Macro

 

Even with its popularity, the X-Macro isn’t without its flaws. Here’s a look at what makes it special and where it falls short:

 

Pros:

• Reduced Recoil: The integrated compensator in the slide significantly tames recoil.

• High Capacity: The 17-round magazine offers impressive firepower for its size.

• Accessory Rail: A proper Picatinny rail allows for a wider range of lights and accessories, like the TLR-7A.

• Optics Ready: The slide is cut for direct mounting of popular red dot sights, allowing for a perfect co-witness with the stock iron sights.

• Interchangeable Backstraps: The ability to swap backstraps helps customize the grip to your hand size.

 

Cons:

• Heat Issues: The integrated compensator causes the slide to heat up quickly, which can transfer to an aluminum grip module, making it uncomfortable to handle after several magazines.

• Grip Size: For some, the stock grip is still too small, making it difficult to achieve a secure hold.

• Sight Picture: The “combat sight picture” can obscure the target, which may not be ideal for all shooters. This can be mitigated with a red dot or by replacing the iron sights.

• Magazine Availability: Finding spare 17-round magazines can be challenging and expensive.

 

 

 

Final Thoughts: Setup or Buy?

So, should you buy a P365 X-Macro or setup your own?

• If you already own a P365: You don’t need to buy a whole new gun. You can easily upgrade your existing firearm with a new grip module, slide, and barrel to match or even exceed the performance of an X-Macro.

• If you’re starting from scratch: Setuping your own P365 allows you to create a firearm that is perfectly tailored to your needs and preferences, and it can be a more economical choice in the long run.
