How to choose the right handgun — the full guide

Step 1: Define your purpose first

Before you look at a single pistol, answer one honest question: what is this handgun primarily for? Home defense, EDC, range training, and competition each point toward a different platform. Most first-time buyers need a do-everything gun. That single answer changes everything about what features actually matter.

Step 2: Stop overthinking caliber — 9mm is the answer

For a first handgun in 2026, 9mm is the right choice for the vast majority of buyers. It delivers equivalent terminal performance to larger calibers, costs less per round, produces less recoil, and is available across more platforms than any other caliber.

Step 3: Striker-fired wins for beginners

No external safety to forget, no hammer to manage, one consistent trigger pull every time. DA/SA pistols have an inconsistent heavy-to-light trigger that takes real time to master — save those for later. Every gun on this list is striker-fired for exactly this reason.

Step 4: Compact is the smart default size

Full-size guns are easier to shoot but harder to carry. Micro-compacts are easy to carry but harder to shoot well as a beginner. A compact 9mm — Glock 19-sized — gives you the best of both worlds.

Don’t make this mistake

Most beginners go too small too fast. Small guns amplify bad technique. Start compact, build fundamentals, then decide if you want to size down.

Step 5: Test ergonomics before buying

Get to a range that rents firearms, try your top picks, and pay attention to grip fit, trigger reach, and how the gun feels after 50 rounds. Fatigue or discomfort is a dealbreaker no spec sheet will warn you about.
